Free fonts for branding and design // April 2021
Have you ever started designing something, got to the point of choosing fonts and get totally overwhelmed and want to give up?
There are hundreds of thousands of fonts out there so it can be hard to work out where to even start. Especially when you’re looking for a free font! Whether you’re mocking up a logo, looking to switch up the font styles on your Squarespace website or making your Instagram post graphics in Canva - basically whenever you need to find something that actually looks good.
There are a few ways you can get started on your quest for the best free font for your design:
Googling ‘best free fonts’ and see what pops up
Jump on Pinterest and go down the visually appealing rabbit-hole (hands up who else has logged into Pinterest to look for ‘just one thing’ then had to pull yourself out an hour later after realising you still haven’t searched for that one thing...)
Go straight to some of the best free font sources: Google Fonts, Font Squirrel, DaFont
All of these methods can work, but unfortunately it can still take some time to narrow down the styles to look at then sift through pages and pages before getting to something you remotely like.
To save you some time, I’ve put together my first roundup of beautiful free fonts for you below. I love searching for the perfect font for my designs so there will be more of these posts in future!
Not only can you find links to download each of these fonts, but I’ve gone even further with my research so you know which fonts are available in Canva and Squarespace, ready to go!

GLASS ANTIQUA
A funky retro serif font (serifs are the little ‘tails’ on the ends of the letters), a little casual with its curves.

FORUM
Classic but feminine with defined serifs.

DARKER GROTESK
A nice contemporary sans, clean but with points of interest.

SOURCE SERIF PRO
The perfect paragraph serif, classic and easy to read. Pairs well with Source Sans Pro!

Available in both the free version of Canva and Squarespace.
SOURCE SANS PRO
Alternatively, the perfect paragraph sans serif! Also great for clean headings, particularly in all caps; pairs well with Source Serif Pro.

OSTRICH SANS
A modern condensed sans serif, minimalist styling.

SPIREQUAL LIGHT
Elegant serif, perfect for branding and bring in a little luxury.

Casual handwritten script, looks like you’ve written in marker - perfect for accents.

LAGU SERIF LIGHT ITALIC
Italic serif, clean and modern.

Modern sans serif, minimal and modern, just a little bit trendy.

The best part about this list is that at April 2021 they are all free for commercial use. Licensing is a big deal and not something you should ignore, so always make sure you check the license when downloading or purchasing a font. Sometimes it can be confusing working out what you can and can’t use a font for. Creative Bloq has a great overview on font licenses.
